Excellent pubs in Cambridge

Gerla de boer pubs

My favourite pubs in Cambridge

Quirky, roaring fires, good pub grub and a good pint of beer, gin or wine. That sums up a good pub for me. There are a few in the historic centre. If you want to have a pint in a pub where the locals hang out, then you need to venture a bit further out.

Gerla de Boer Eagle pub

The Eagle Pub

Without a doubt, the Eagle Pub is the most famous pub in Cambridge. Although it can get busy with tourists, it is a charming pub with a lot of history. Don’t expect top-end craft beers here, but enjoy a drink in the pub where the finding of the DNA was first announced and where the RAF pilots used to party, build human pyramids and write on the ceiling.

Gerla de boer Mill pond

The Mill Pond Pub

I have been coming here at the Mill Pond Pub since 2009 when it was still in different hands. Since the changes, the pub has much improved, and when I’m in the area, I often pop in for a drink. On sunny days, you can pick up take away drinks so you can sip on your beer or wine on the grass at Coe Fenn and watch live on the river go by.

Gerla de Boer Free Press

The Free Press Pub

The Free Press Pub is an absolute gem. Tucked away in the backstreets behind Parkers Piece, you’ll find a tiny pub with even a delightful snug. They serve the best Scotch egg in Cambridge and besides their excellent pub menu, a daily changing specials menu too.

Gerla de boer Punter pub

The Punter

You have to venture a bit outside the historic centre to get to the Punter Pub. Not difficult to find, though. It is just off Castle Hill. They don’t serve a traditional Sunday lunch, but good pub grub. At the back of the pub, there is a big barn and a lovely terrace, which is a perfect spot for an Alfresco lunch or drink.

Gerla de boer Petersfield

The Petersfield Pub

This lovely pub is tucked away in the backstreets of Mill Road. You can often find me here at the Petersfield as it is close to our house. Excellent for Saturday brunch, lunch or dinner.

Gerla de Boer Champion of the thames

The Champion of the Thames

One of the only pubs in Cambridge, which only sells drinks apart from a few snacks and on Sunday cheese and biscuits. You can find The Champion of the Thames just 5 minutes walk from Kings Parade and is very popular with locals and students.
